1 March Curzon Street

London

Agnes and Piper met at the Ashford townhouse as they had planned the day before.

Piper practically bounced out of her half-boots in her excitement. “I know you will love Persephone as much as the rest of us.”

“I have no doubt.” Agnes grinned. She was just thrilled to have a distraction. She was anxious for the night to arrive. “I’m most looking forward to making Matilda’s acquaintance.” She held a finger up to her smile widened lips. “Don’t tell Persephone.”

“I believe she is used to us fawning all over Tillie. That will come as no big revelation.” Piper threaded their arms together and dropped the knocker. Both women took a step back as the door was flung open wide before the knocker even had a chance to do its job.

“Piper!” Persephone cried. “Oh and you must be Agnes?” She grabbed for Agnes’ hand and tugged her over the threshold, Agnes very nearly stumbling with Persephone’s enthusiasm.

“Ooh, pray forgive me.” Persephone’s voice held a smile. “I’m over the moon to meet you,” her voice full of enthusiasm. “I feel as if we are already friends.”

“No completely my fault.” Agnes flashed a grin. “I’ve never been very graceful. Just ask my mother.”

Persephone patted her hand where it was still clasped tightly. “I’ve heard about your mother.”

“Piper!” Agnes shot daggers at Piper.

“Well you are my most dear friend and you were out of the country.” Piper flashed a sheepish grin. “Besides she needed to know about everyone in the family.”

“Well with that compliment I will dig down deep into my soul and try my very best to forgive you.”

“Perhaps I can extend an olive branch. I’ve had tea prepared.” Persephone led them towards the salon. “And Tillie is toddling around. That is an adorable sight to behold and enough to entertain.”

“Please inform us that you’ve had cook prepare her delightful lemon cakes?” Piper breathed out a sigh, her hands pressed to her heart, and her eyes pleading.

Persephone glanced over her shoulder with a chuckle. “Of course.”

Agnes stepped through the door of the blue salon and stopped short. “What have you done with all the bric-a-brac?” Then she giggled as a little red haired girl stumbled clumsily from behind the settee with a drooling giggle. She burst out laughing when Parker came crawling from behind the piece of furniture with a low growl.

“I wondered where you went, my love.” A flush brightened Persephone’s cheeks.

“I’m attempting to rein in this wild beast.” Parker grabbed Tillie and gave her a raspberry on her newly exposed belly. “Look Tillie, we have visitors.”

“Please sit,” Persephone gestured toward one of the blue and striped spindly legged chairs.

Agnes sat and situated her skirts, then turned interested eyes in the direction of the settee where Persephone was now pouring tea. “Piper told me of your idea for a home for women in need.” When she saw Persephone’s brow furrowed she added, “I hope you don’t mind that she told me a bit of your ordeal.”

Persephone’s head tilted to the side and a contented smile lifted the corners of her lips.
